The Mediterranean Diet Is More Than Olive Oil: The Power of Bioactives
Share
Ask someone to name the healthiest food in the Mediterranean Diet, and chances are they'll say olive oil.
They're not wrong.
Extra virgin olive oil is one of the cornerstones of the Mediterranean Diet. Rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and naturally occurring polyphenols, it has earned its reputation as one of the world's healthiest foods. But here's something many people don't realize:
The remarkable health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet don't come from olive oil alone.
They come from the extraordinary variety of plant foods that people throughout the Mediterranean region enjoy every day.
The Power of Variety
The Mediterranean Diet is built around a colorful mix of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, herbs, olive oil, and moderate amounts of fish and wine. Rather than relying on a single "superfood," it provides hundreds of naturally occurring plant compounds that work together to support health. Many of these naturally occurring plant compounds are known as bioactives [1]. Unlike vitamins and minerals, bioactives are not considered essential nutrients because they are not required to prevent nutrient deficiencies. However, a growing body of research suggests they can influence important biological processes and may contribute to health and healthy aging when consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern [2].
Among the richest sources of these bioactives are three hallmark Mediterranean fruits:
- Olives
- Grapes
- Tomatoes
Each contributes its own unique profile of beneficial plant compounds.
The Olive's Best-Kept Secret: Verbascoside
Olives contain hundreds of naturally occurring polyphenols that help protect the fruit from environmental stress. These same compounds have attracted scientific interest because of their antioxidant activity and their potential role in supporting cardiovascular health and healthy aging. One olive polyphenol deserves special attention: verbascoside [3].
Although less familiar than hydroxytyrosol or oleuropein, verbascoside has become the focus of growing scientific interest because of its potent antioxidant activity and its potential role in supporting healthy inflammation, vascular function, and healthy aging [4].
At OlivinoLife, we selected Opextan® Olive Fruit Extract because it is fundamentally different from most olive extracts available today. Unlike many olive ingredients that are produced from olive leaves and standardized primarily for oleuropein, Opextan® is derived from the olive fruit itself, preserving the fruit's naturally occurring spectrum of polyphenols. It is standardized to contain at least 10% of total olive polyphenols, with verbascoside as its major polyphenolic constituent [5].
Opextan® is produced from carefully selected Coratina olives, a traditional cultivar from southern Italy renowned for its exceptionally high concentration of naturally occurring polyphenols. Coratina olives are especially rich in verbascoside, making them an ideal source for a premium olive fruit extract [5].
Researchers have also found that verbascoside remains relatively stable during olive processing, allowing it to remain an important component of the olive fruit's natural polyphenol profile. Laboratory studies have demonstrated its remarkable antioxidant activity, and scientists believe it contributes significantly to the health-promoting properties of olives.
By selecting Opextan®, we chose a scientifically characterized olive fruit extract that delivers a consistent and meaningful amount of verbascoside within the natural matrix of olive polyphenols—a level of standardization not typically found in generic olive extracts.
Grapes: A Complementary Source of Polyphenols
Grapes contribute a different family of bioactive compounds to the Mediterranean Diet.
While resveratrol is perhaps the best-known grape polyphenol, grape seeds are naturally rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)—powerful antioxidant compounds that have been studied for their role in supporting healthy circulation and cardiovascular function.
That's why Olivino Essential includes both MegaNatural®-BP Grape Seed Extract and Veri-te™ Resveratrol, providing complementary grape bioactives from different parts of the grape.
Tomatoes: Completing the Mediterranean Trio
Tomatoes contribute to yet another unique family of plant compounds. In addition to lycopene, tomatoes naturally contain phytoene, phytofluene, and other carotenoids that contribute to their vibrant red color and nutritional value.
Olivino Essential includes Lyc-O-Mato® Tomato Nutrient Complex, providing this naturally occurring spectrum of tomato carotenoids and completing the trio of hallmark Mediterranean fruits featured in our formula.
No Single Fruit Provides Everything. It's the Combination That Matters
One of the defining characteristics of the Mediterranean Diet is its diversity. Rather than depending on one food or one nutrient, it combines a wide variety of plant foods that provide an extraordinary range of bioactive compounds over a lifetime. Researchers believe this diversity is one of the reasons the Mediterranean Diet has consistently been associated with cardiovascular health, healthy aging, and overall wellness.
That philosophy has guided OlivinoLife from the very beginning.
Rather than focusing on a single trendy ingredient, we designed Olivino Essential to bring together premium bioactives from three hallmark fruits of the Mediterranean Diet—olives, grapes, and tomatoes. Each ingredient was selected for a specific reason:
- Opextan® Olive Fruit Extract provides a standardized source of olive polyphenols, with verbascoside as its major polyphenolic constituent, sourced from polyphenol-rich Coratina olives.
- MegaNatural®-BP Grape Seed Extract delivers grape seed polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), which have been studied for their role in supporting healthy blood pressure and circulation.
- Veri-te™ Resveratrol provides a highly purified, clinically studied source of trans-resveratrol produced through a proprietary fermentation process, ensuring exceptional purity and consistency.
- Lyc-O-Mato® Tomato Nutrient Complex delivers a naturally occurring spectrum of tomato carotenoids—including lycopene, phytoene, and phytofluene—rather than lycopene alone.
To the best of our knowledge, Olivino Essential is the only dietary supplement that combines these four proprietary Mediterranean bioactives in one convenient daily softgel.
For us, developing Olivino Essential has never been about adding trendy ingredients to a label. It's about selecting scientifically characterized ingredients that reflect the diversity—and the quality—of the Mediterranean Diet itself.
The Bottom Line
The Mediterranean Diet reminds us that good health isn't built on one ingredient—it's built on the power of many wholesome foods working together over time.
That same philosophy has guided OlivinoLife from the very beginning. Every ingredient in Olivino Essential has been carefully selected—not simply because it comes from the Mediterranean Diet, but because it is scientifically characterized, clinically studied, and manufactured to the highest quality standards.
By combining premium bioactives from olives, grapes, and tomatoes, we've created a formula that reflects both the diversity of the Mediterranean Diet and our commitment to science-based nutrition.
Because quality matters—from the source of the ingredient to the science behind it.
To your good health!
